Hard light is the opposite of SOFT LIGHT. Hard Lighting gives sharp, clear shadows and helps you take high contrast photos.

The smaller the light source is relative to the subject, the harder the light. Therefore, while the sun is huge, it is very far away and so seems small, especially at midday; so it creates a hard light when the skies are clear.
